June 2018: Around the World in 80 Days – Grand Prize

Weekend in Johannesburg

From the 12th May till the 30th June, our Dawn children aged between 6 and 13 years old embarked on a project called Around the World in 80 Days, which aimed to educate them about world geography in a fun and educative manner. The programme was based on the works of Jules VERNE, a French author (1828 – 1905), and more particularly the novel “Around the World in 80 Days” which describes the world trip of Phileas Fogg in a time when travelling was very rare. During the 3rd session, the children were asked to draw what the Motto of the French Republic “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” means for them. The best artists won a trip to Johannesburg scheduled for the 24-26 August 2018.

After much preparation the 3 girls aged 12 years and their caregivers arrived in Johannesburg on Friday, 24 August 2018, full of excitement and happiness. The first night was dinner and games at Monte Casino-Fourways. The next day they went to the Rosebank African Art & Craft Market where they meet stall owners from different countries in Africa. They then went to the Oriental Plaza where they experienced a “Taste of India”. They enjoyed the food despite it being a bit too hot for them and asked to go back. The day ended on a very happy but bouncy note at Bounce where they had 2 hours of fun which lead to sheer exhaustion in a good way.
The children and caregivers returned on Sunday, 26 August 2018.
