“The Kilimanjaro Dream Project”:
In 2008, we run a campaign whereby all our children wrote their dream on a piece of paper. The dreams were then physically carried all the way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. On the back of this campaign, we are now busy making 12 dreams come true. These dreams will take place between September and December 2009 and will include: visits to Ushaka Marine World in Durban, attending an international cricket game, a guided tour of Bloemfontein, meeting a Generations actress, a visit to Robben Island, a ride in a captive hot air balloon. Subscribe to our newsletter to hear more about these dreams coming true in an exceptional manner!
Children of the Dawn - Who We Are

Our Structure
Today, Children of the Dawn is registered in South Africa as a Non-Profit Organisation (No: 021-164 NPO) and as a Public Benefit Organisation (No: 930 001 736). Among other things, this means that donations made by South African individuals or companies are tax-deductible.
A sister organisation was opened in France in December 2003 under the name “Les Enfants de l’Aurore (France)” with the same mission as Children of the Dawn. Both organisations work hand in hand to support rural South African children in dire need.
From its inception to the beginning of 2006, Children of the Dawn operated on a structure run totally by volunteers. Since April 2006, Children of the Dawn has been employing a fulltime project manager with the view to expand its activities and reach 700 children. Now that this target has been reached, our medium term-goal is to reach some 850 primary children and to strengthen the level of services delivered to the children. At least 88% of donations made by individual sponsors are directly spent on supporting the sponsored children.
Each rural community implementing Children of the Dawn’s model is thoroughly monitored through financial and activity reports, field visits, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Some of the rural communities we work with are closely associated with a national rural network called REDI.
Children of the Dawn presently comprises of about 250 members, mainly consisting of individual South African or foreign sponsors.
Children of the Dawn is managed by:
- The Council of Children of the Dawn, an elected structure who oversees the work of the organisation and defines its strategy. Currently, the Council members are: Agnes QWABE (Mathabatha), Magali MALHERBE (National Project Manager), Puleng MDIYA (Qwaqwa), Morné DU PLESSIS (Treasurer), Vincent PHAKATHI (Ermelo), Lindy VAN HEERDEN (Secretary), and Bellinah LUBISI (Mangweni)
- A Management Committee, an elected sctructured who handles day-to-day decisions. Currently, the Management Committee comprises Magali MALHERBE (National Project Manager), Morné DU PLESSIS (Treasurer), and Lindy VAN HEERDEN (Secretary).
