As part of our exciting programme for young children “Children in Action”, Children of the Dawn recently run a Spelling Bee across our 8 communities.
This led to a National Competition which took place from the 13th to the 15th of July in Mathabatha, Limpopo. 16 young participants qualified for this original event.
The Matatiele team had to travel over 2000 kms to participate! Much fun was had by all, as, aside from spelling, the programme was jam-packed with fun activities such as yoga, a visit to the Sacred Tree, donkey rides, games and stories. The spelling bee started with the under 9’s, who went up to 14 rounds with the winning word being “Bowl”. The under 14’s only managed a few rounds. The winning word was “Skyscraper”. In addition, the I Can Spell Team Challenge saw them work together as 8 units. Teachers from local schools were so impressed that they now want to implement this as part of their teaching. The winners emerged with Qwaqwa taking the Gold, Ermelo the silver and Matatiele the bronze. However all children were champions as they spelt so bravely and confidently. Each participant received wonderful soaps kindly donated by L’Occitane. The 1st prize winners each won a Mr Price Voucher.
The purpose of the event was to improve the children’s self-confidence, their public speaking skills as well as their command of the English language. We believe the event was a resounding success!
Thank you to Kinderfonds Mamas for making this event possible. Our 16 kids went home with a smile on their face, a head full of great memories and the knowledge they are gifted!
