In mid-2013, 210 teen beneficiaries from the 8 rural South African participated in the module “Loving to Write” of our programme My Future, My Responsibility to develop writing skills in English. Children of the Dawn beneficiaries were asked to write a 4-page story in English starting with “Zuki never imagined that this would happen. This was just so surprising, so unexpected”. From April to June 2013, our beneficiaries attended workshops where caregivers checked they were on the right track, gave them piece of advice for their story and helped them with the grammar, vocabulary, spelling, etc.
The eight winners were announced on the 15th of September for each area. Prizes linked to art and literatures were also given to the winners. Children were judged on the originality of their story but also on their level of grammar, syntax and spelling.
The four-best stories were edited and published in a little book and then distributed in early July 2014 in four Mercure hotels across South Africa for customers to read and enjoy the stories written by our beneficiaries.
A big thank you to Solidarity ACCOR and for all the individual and corporate sponsors for making this opportunity possible for our beneficiaries!
