Alumni Story – Minenhle Mpumaze Beneficiary

From a Grade 3 learner at Mpumaze Primary School to a qualified Surveying Engineering graduate, Minenhle’s journey is a powerful story of perseverance, support and determination. Minenhle’s journey with Children of the Dawn (COTD) began when she was in Grade 3 at Mpumaze Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal. Growing up as an orphan in a rural community, she became one of the organisation’s beneficiaries and received support that would continue throughout her educational journey. From monthly food parcels and school uniforms, including school shoes, to meals provided at school, COTD helped ensure that Minenhle had the basic support she needed to focus on her education. She also attended the organisation’s mentoring programme twice a week, where she learned about the importance of education, making positive choices and planning for her future. COTD also exposed Minenhle and other beneficiaries to experiences beyond their communities. Through educational and recreational trips to museums, zoos, beaches and hiking destinations, she had the opportunity to explore places she had never visited before. Christmas celebrations, gifts from sponsors and the ongoing care of COTD caregivers also created meaningful memories throughout her childhood.

Supporting Her Educational Journey

COTD’s support continued as Minenhle progressed through high school. The organisation’s caregivers guided her with career choices, university applications and her NSFAS application, helping her navigate important decisions about her future. In 2020, Minenhle was accepted to study Surveying Engineering at Mangosuthu University of Technology. As the institution was far from home, COTD assisted her with registration fees and transport costs so that she could begin her studies. Her university journey came with challenges. The programme required her to complete an access course that was not funded by NSFAS. Minenhle reached out to the COTD Head Office team and provided the necessary documentation from the institution. The organisation then assisted her with accommodation and groceries until she completed the access course. Once she received NSFAS funding, Minenhle was able to move into university residence and receive a student allowance. COTD continued to check in on her throughout her studies, particularly during test and examination periods, providing encouragement and reminding her to remain focused. When NSFAS payments were delayed, COTD once again stepped in to provide assistance with groceries, ensuring that financial challenges did not stand in the way of her education.

From Beneficiary to Graduate

In 2024, Minenhle secured an in-service training opportunity, giving her valuable practical experience and supporting her journey towards completing her qualification. She successfully completed her Diploma in Surveying Engineering, marking a significant milestone in her life. For Minenhle, COTD has been a consistent source of support from primary school through to university. The organisation supported her not only financially, but also emotionally and academically, helping her navigate challenges and remain committed to her goals. Reflecting on her journey, Minenhle expressed her deep gratitude for the role COTD played in her life, particularly for the support she received throughout her education. Today, Minenhle is looking towards the next chapter of her journey. She is currently seeking an internship or entry-level opportunity within the construction industry, where she can gain further experience, apply her skills and begin building her professional career. Minenhle’s story is a powerful example of the impact that consistent support can have on a young person’s life. From a young beneficiary at the Mpumaze Centre to a qualified graduate, Minenhle’s journey demonstrates that with determination, opportunity and the right support, young people can overcome challenges and build brighter futures.
