2012: Recycled Creations

Recycled CreationsOur Recycled Creations project was an exciting programme that we developed for our children who were younger than 14! The aim of the project was to turn “Rubbish into Art” and learn about recycling at the same time. Our children were given the task to collect all types of “rubbish” and to bring it to their care centres where they would then transform their “rubbish” into an animal of their choice. The animal had to be 1 metre high and each team was given a budget of R500 to complete their task. We got the children’s guardians and families involved as well to make a really nice family day!

Once the children finished their animal, the guardians and families were called to the centres to view the creations and vote on which were the two best animals. Our children created 31 different animals in total. The two best animals where then sent to Children of the Dawn’s head-office for final judging and one animal was chosen as the winner. We were so impressed with how creative our children were; some created amazing masterpieces.

On 15th  June 2012, the “Crocodile” from Mpumaze was chosen as the winning creation. The judges based their decision on the fact that the children did it entirely on their own and it was entirely made of recycled objects. Our Mpumaze children were then awarded with R100 each to decide on what they would like to do. Then they had a democratic vote and decided on a picnic/braai! We are so proud of our little ones!
